Why this exists
Most online haiku tools stop at counting vowels and calling it a syllable count. That approach gets common words wrong constantly, and it says nothing about whether a poem actually functions as a haiku — imagery, a seasonal reference, a clear cut between two images. Haiku Checker was built to do both: an accurate, dictionary-backed syllable engine, and a literary analysis layer that treats haiku as more than an arithmetic exercise.
What makes it different
- A real pronunciation dictionary (~126,000 words), not a vowel-counting formula.
- Honest confidence labels on every syllable count, including when a word has more than one valid pronunciation.
- Both a strict 5-7-5 mode for classroom use and a modern mode that doesn't penalize literary haiku for skipping the exact count.
